How to Highlight Text in Adobe Illustrator
In Adobe Illustrator, there are different ways to highlight text. We will show you two different methods to highlight the text. You can choose any method that you want.
Highlight text using Appearance
You can highlight the text using the Appearance panel. The text will be fully editable and you can change the text style and size easily like normal text.
Step 1: Grab the Type Tool from the left toolbar to add some text that you want to highlight.
Step 2: Type the required text that you want to use.
Step 3: Select the text using the Selection Tool.
Note: If you already have text in the design then select it using the Selection Tool.
Step 4: Go to Window > Appearance to use the Appearance panel.
You can also open the Appearance panel by Properties > Appearance, and click on the three dots on the right side of the workspace.
Step 5: The Appearance panel will appear.
Step 6: Click on Add New Fill.
Step 7: Select any fill color depending on the Highlight color that you want to give to the text.
The fill color is applied to the text as you can see.
Step 9: Go to Effect > Convert to Shape > Rectangle.
Step 10: Shape Options panel will appear.
Step 11: Change the Extra Width and Extra Height if needed and click OK.
Step 12: The text will look like this, a rectangle shape is on the top of the text.
Step 13: From the Appearance panel, select Fill and drag it under the Character.
Here is the Highlighted text. You can edit the font and you can also add any other words to it if needed.
Highlight text with Rectangle
Another way to highlight the text is by using the Rectangle shape. Set the shape color to the highlighted color and Send it to the Back of the text and the text on top will be highlighted. Remember that if you add more text then you need to resize the shape depending on the text.
Step 1: Add the text using the Type Tool.
Step 2: Grab the Rectangle Tool from the left toolbar or press M from the keyboard to use the Rectangle Tool.
Step 3: Draw a Rectangle shape over the text.
Step 4: Select the Fill color for the shape by the Fill Tool or Fill from the Appearance.
Step 5: Right-click on the shape and select Arrange > Send to Back.
The shape is sent to the back of the text and the text on top is highlighted.

Illustrator Cannot Highlight Text
In Adobe Illustrator, there is no option available to directly highlight the text but you can highlight the text by the Appearance panel.
Add new fill from the Appearance panel and then go to Effect > Convert to Shape > Rectangle. Press OK from the Shape Option panel and drag the fill under the Character in Appearance panel. The highlight will be applied to the text.
