To make the artboard transparent in Illustrator, go to View > Show Transparency Grid. The artboard will be transparent.

1st Method: Properties panel
In Adobe Illustrator, you can find the Click to Show Transparency Grid option under the Properties > Ruler & Grid > Click to Show Transparency Grid.
The transparent grid will appear.
2nd Method: View menu
If you don’t find the Click to Show Transparency Grid option under the Properties panel in Illustrator, then go to View > Show Transparency Grid from the overhead menu bar.
The shortcut key to Show Transparency Grid in Illustrator is Shift+Ctrl+D.
To see the artboard colors again, do the same steps again. But this time you will find Hide instead of Show in both options. Go to Properties > Ruler & Grid > Click to Hide Transparency Grid.
For the View menu, go to View > Hide Transparency Grid.
The Transparent Grid will disappear and the white background will appear.
