How to Underline Text in Illustrator

How to Underline in Illustrator (2 Ways)

In this tutorial, we are going to describe two methods to Underline Text in Adobe Illustrator. In other words, you are going to learn the easiest way to add Underline words and text to your designs.

1^st Method: Underline through Character panel

Firstly, we are going to underline the text using the easiest way in Adobe Illustrator. The easiest way can be done is through the Character panel. You can easily underline a word, a character, or a sentence in your design.

Step 1: Grab the Selection Tool from the left toolbar or you can also use the keyboard shortcut V to use the Selection Tool to select any object, shape, image, or text.

Step 2: Here we are using the Selection Tool to select the required text that we want to Underline. So select any text that you want to underline. Here we have selected the word as you can see in the image.

Step 3: To underline text go to Properties > Character > More Options > Underline.

The text is underlined as you can see in the image.

If you want to underline any text from a paragraph simply select the text and repeat step 3.

You can easily underline any part of text whether it’s a character or a full sentence.

2^nd Method: Underline by Line Segment Tool

The second method to underline a text or word in Illustrator is by using the Line Segment Tool. Draw a straight line under the text or word and it will be underlined in Adobe Illustrator.

Step 1: Right-click or long-press on the Rectangle Tool and select Line Segment Tool. You can also use the keyboard shortcut \ to use the Line Segment Tool.

Step 2: Press & Hold the Shift key from the keyboard and then draw a line under the text that you want to underline in Illustrator.

As you can see we have drawn a straight line using the Line Segment Tool to underline the text. The text is underlined now.

Note: You can also increase the stroke of the line to make it clear and more visible.

You can see we have increased the stroke so that the underline is more clear and matches the text structure.
